How to self-collect a MRSA swab sample

PATIENT SWAB INSTRUCTIONS:

Mucosal surface (Nose)

  • Take the cotton tipped swab from the package
  • Gently dip the cotton tip into the culture media to moisten it.
  • Gently rotate the swab around the inner surface of the nostril (anterior nares).
  • Repeat on the other nostril (anterior nares) using the same swab. Only one swab is necessary.
  • Place the cotton tipped swab into the plastic tube with the culture media at the bottom.

Groin/perineum

  • Take the cotton tipped swab from the package.
  • Gently dip the cotton tip into the culture media to moisten it.
  • Rotate the moistened swab gently but firmly over the area on each side of the groin. Only one swab is necessary
  • Place the cotton tipped swab into the plastic tube with the gel at the bottom.

Important – Specimen labelling and delivery:

  • Ensure full first and last names and date of birth (dd/mm/yy) are clearly written on the specimen container
  • Ensure date and time of collection is written on the request form and specimen container

Ensure the site is written on the specimen container.
