Medical Laboartory Scientist

A Medical Laboratory Scientist tests and studies blood, tissue and fluid samples from patients. They also assist to prepare samples for pathologists to examine. A scientist uses and maintains specialised laboratory equipment, quality assurance and safety standards.

A Scientist can specialise in any of the following:

  • Microbiology
  • Biochemistry
  • Haematology (Blood)
  • Histology (tissues)
  • Cytology (Cells)
  • Immunology (Immune system)

 

How do I become a scientist?

Medical Laboratory Scientists must be registered by the New Zealand Medical Laboratory Science Board (NZMLSB). To register with you board you must have either

a Bachelors degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a Bachelor of Science plus a minimum of two years experience in a medical laboratory.
