Dr Upton is a graduate of the University of Otago Medical School. She trained in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in Auckland. She then completed her training with a two-year research fellowship at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, USA.

Dr Upton currently works 0.8 tenths at Labtests and 0.2 tenths at Middlemore hospital where she has a viral hepatitis clinic. In addition to viral hepatitis, she is interested in the epidemiology of antibiotic resistance and medical education.

Dr Upton holds joint fellowships in the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Infectious Diseases) and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (Clinical Microbiology).
