Urine for Culture Tests

The following instructions are for patients attending a Urine for Culture test.  There are various types of Urine for Culture Test available.  Please follow the instructions for the test type recommended for you by your clinician.
 

Male And Female Older Children And Adults (MSU)

  • Pass a small amount of urine into the toilet.
  • Pass a small amount of urine into the dish provided.
  • Pass remaining urine into the toilet.
  • Transfer urine from the dish into the container provided.
  • Ensure your name and date of birth is clearly written on the container.
  • Ensure date and time of collection is written on form.
  • Hand specimen to a staff member.
  • NB to staff/parents/caregivers: If mid-stream not possible, ensure “Clean Catch Urine” is clearly written on form in clinical details.

Children (Bag Urine)

  • Clean and dry around penis or labia, removing any cream.
  • Apply bag firmly to ensure a tight seal around urethral opening.
  • Remove bag when full and carefully transfer a small amount of urine to the tube provided.
  • Ensure name and date of birth is clearly written on the tube.
  • Ensure date and time of collection is written on form.
  • Return to Labtests Collection Centre as soon as possible.  If delayed, please refrigerate specimen.

Urine For Chlamydia

NB to client:  Ensure you do not pass urine for at least 2 hours prior to test.

  • Pass the FIRST 10-30ml urine into the dish provided.
  • Transfer the urine into the container provided.
  • Ensure name and date of birth is clearly written on the tube.
  • Ensure date and time of collection is written on form.

TB Urine
Three early morning urines are collected on three consecutive days and each specimen must be delivered daily to the nearest Collection Centre as soon as possible following collection.


Before collecting each daily specimen:

  • Collect first urine passed for the day into the dish provided or if you think it is not large enough, a clean ice cream container will be satisfactory.
  • Transfer the urine into the container provided.
  • Ensure name and date of birth is clearly written on the bottle and either Specimen 1, 2 or 3.
  • Ensure date and time of collection is written on form.
  • Take each specimen (and form) into the Collection Centre each day as soon after collection as possible.
